Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle was made by Portugal in 1482 and became one of the most important stops for the Atlantic Slave Trade. It’s the oldest European building below the Sahara Desert. The Dutch took over the port in 1637. They continued the slave trade until 1814. In 1872 the British took over the coast until Ghana landed independence in 1957. Still it remains as an important landmark to remember the atrocties that happened in the area. It also continues as a major port for fish in Ghana.

When in Ghana….you meet friends.

When you aren’t called ‘abruni’ (a foreigner) or asking ‘how many ‘cedi’s’ (currency) you get to meet some of the most genuine, sincere people in the world. Just today, a local market woman remembered me as the ‘long island boy’ and asked how my day was, and it brightened my day. You find familiar reminders, such as a egg sandwich, or even just a friendly smile can greatly make someones day.
